I try not to lean into parasociality, but of the celebrities I'm familiar with, Hayley does seem like someone a bit more in touch and willing to speak up about things that people of her level of fame tend to shy away from discussing. I definitely found it endearing when she gushed about attending a Black church in TN for the first time and being awed by the level of musically and vocal abiity and joy of the choir and musicians. I knew I was in the right place when during the performance of True Believer at her concert everyone yelled "The South will not rise again, til it's paid for every sin." and later on she proceeded to sing a small portion of A Long Walk by Jill Scott 😂 I really enjoy Ms. Paramore.

Literally 55 seconds in and just the mention of New Jack Swing and Stevie Wonder told me everything I needed to know. I knew there was a reason I loved Paramore so much...Lol

Hayley be talking about civil rights like she's leading a revolution. Hasn't slowed her down one bit. She's one of the few artists I've seen call out her own immaturity in her earlier work. It's not simple stuff like Kesha changing the P. Diddy line in Tik Tok. It's looking at your past self and knowing what you were feeling and not being okay with how you reacted to the situation. Her constantly taking accountability is a characteristic of a leader. It's why people feel comfortable following her music word for word. Paramore is literally a safe space because it's policed by Haley herself. 🐬

I’m not a Paramore fan, much respect to what they have accomplished.
I think it’s important for white music fans to realize that there’s a whole world of music out there to get into, and they’re really missing out if they don’t explore.

as a white boy living in Russia and a bit of a scene kid back in the day, if I met someone liking Paramore it was always like a secret handshake to me. it was not cool to like their music, they were very easily pigeonholed into the cast of Twilight-related one-hit-wonders, especially for my peers who rarely understood English lyrics and haven't had a clue about All We Know is Falling. but if you met someone who really digged their music, you knew exactly why, and this connection was really special.

I'm a sucker for a well-rounded rock or pop diva with the voice and the body to show for, but Haley Williams always seemed more like a thoughtful artsy older sister or a girl next door. it was refreshing to see a female artist out there not sexualizing their image and not catering to men's expectations, all the while being so unapologetically themself and so sincere and vulnerable in the song lyrics.

Paramore's music not only helped me through the rough times of adolescence, but also made me a genuinely better person.

xennial here. the 2000s emo/pop punk era is so under-analyzed and misunderstood and memory-holed, really appreciate your dive into some corners of it here. this video got me (re-)thinking about the economics of that scene and how people found out about new music not just from music blogs but also video games and stuff like wrestling, x-sports, etc. anyway, great video! 🐬
