This became the first console generation I completely ignored and stuck with PC exclusively.

54, I’ve been playing video games since it became a thing. This has 100% been the worst generation ever, and my last ever console generation.

When game companies go public and have shares available to buy, it’s no longer about what makes the games fun,
it’s about what systems they can create to keep the customer spending, and how cheaply.

I bought a Series X and it's basically become a glorified bluray player for my TV 😂

Easily on par with what led to the crash of '83, meaning if its not the worst, it's tied for it. AAA studios are so bloated that they can't get anything done, not even adopt the in-engine tools. Which is why I'll actually defend these layoffs at every turn - we've had devs point out that they have 60 people doing a job 1 person is capable of. Also, code fixes that could take minutes taking months. Dev input means nothing, though we're also ignoring that the tech bubble bursting led to a lot of people who felt forced to learn to code were forced into the booming gaming sector. Everyone wants to be good enough at their job to at least not lose it, but many of these people are at best indifferent to gaming when they don't outright hate it and all gamers. And then there's the media side. They almost all hate gamers, they're incompetent and on a website that swears it'll never use AI, I saw an early review that literally looked like it was generated by an AI purely from the trailer. Literally nothing in the article told us anything we all couldn't plainly see in the most recent trailer. We have scandal after scandal, with them making up accusations of sexual harassment which was quickly disproven, but that website and every other would spend the next year citing that one disproven piece to commit liable against an Eastern developer.

Every aspect of the mainstream industry is in shambles, except those Eastern developers. They can't even trust their internal teams to do the work, so contract a ton of it out. And games like Expedition 33 show that can work, but not when the core team is so big that nothing can be decided or agreed upon.

It's not all bad. We have seen turn based combat reinvented time and time again in recent years, showing its not dead. At the same time, every action-based system either mimics the Batman games or the Souls games. Yes, the indy and AA industry is booming. Even the adult game industry is booming once you learn how to get past Steam pushing shovelware. The AAA industry needs to die at this point. That way these smaller teams, or teams with a unified vision can replace them. Even with these layoffs, due to investor concerns, no AAA developer is going to be permitted to take risks. We need to go back to that era where the new Sony is willing to gamble and invest in a new genre like MMO's in EverQuest. Where every game isn't a CoD, Souls or sports clone. Or empty cash grabs using existing IP's that have nothing to do with the actual IP. And an era where 80% of all Nintendo games aren't some iteration of Mario.

The scary part is, we need affordable platforms like Playstation and Nintendo (Sorry, Xbox has been dead since late in the 360 era. It's been in a coma since) I'd hope Sega would make another go, but after permanently closing their famous arcades after Covid, I don't see them gambling on re-entering the console space. Ideally, we need to move away from the publicly traded companies and publishers, bc that means too many people who know nothing about making games are making decisions about how to make games. Gaming is still the most lucrative entertainment industry, it's just that current leadership is beyond incompetent due to being purely profit driven. No game should cost $1bil, let alone $2bil. Even when you're making over a billion a year just selling shark cards. Larian showed that you can do everything the big studios do for around $100mil, but do it better and for even generic npc's. Expedition 33 showed you can make deep AAA rpg's for less than $12mil if you spend your money properly, even if it is "mostly" linear. I've never bought this idea that open world games are so much more expensive bc the world map is procedurally generated and then refined.

Sorry for the novel, but yes, this probably has been the worst console generation ever - yet there is more reason to look on the future of gaming with hope than we've had at any point in 20yrs. All bc these new studios are crushing it, and there are no EA's around to buy them up and destroy what made them successful. I just don't think the industry is going to look anything like it does today in another 5-10yrs. I expect every major developer, except Capcom, Larian, etc, to either be gone or to have completely reinvented everything about how they approach making games.

I did notice that everyone talking about price hikes of 10$ from 60-70$ tends to ignore the fact in Europe it went up from 60 Euros to 80 (over 90$).
This alongside PC ports of Sony games is one of the major reasons why i did not buy a PS5.
And also it might be a personal opinion but the orignal Demons souls is just more visually appealing to me than the Remake.

Both PS5 and Xbox have been underwhelming for games. However, Series X redeems itself for backwards compatibility. I’ve played countless Xbox One and 360 games on it that I would have otherwise skipped.

This generation made me completely switch to emulation. It truly opened my eyes to how the vast majority of new games are simply soulless cash grabs, and how truly great previous generations were.

Limitations bred creativity and innovations, and you can truly feel the love, care and passion from the old devs. Just look at Bungie vs 343 for example. Oh my bad, i meant "HaLo StUdIos".

Nowadays its all dogshit, everything is made to extract as much money from you as they can while taking features away and repackaging later as dlc or subscriptions.

It's simply designed
for consumers, and not customers anymore.

I genuinely can't wait for the AAA crash. It cannot happen soon enough. We desperately need a bloodbath in these studios.

To end this, i personally already succeeded into convincing 2 people to not buy the consoles or new consoles and made them turn into emulation. If buying isn't owning, piracy isn't stealing.

Each new gen seems to be the worst ever now. We kinda peaked with the 360/wii/ps3 gen....games looked good enough, and could be made where we had multiple iterations per gen. Subsequent consoles should have focused on more detailed , interactive environments etc...not wasting cpu/gpu power on useless new lighting techniques etc.

I've been priced out of the Switch 2 lol. It cost over 500 in Lithuania, and it's games cost 70, not to mention that PS5 games cost over 60 too.
