Larry Bird is definitely in the goat conversation. There's no way that 5 players are better than he was.

I don't get it when they say Bird wasn't athletic. Before his back injury he was very athletic, and that rebound and put back on his missed shot is not something an unathletic guy can do.

Tell me, have you ever seen someone else make a play like Bird did?
Larry made 21 rebounds in this game and also in the next one too; against Moses Malone, who led the NBA in rebounds during the early 1980s; capturing five consecutive rebounding titles from 1981 through 1985.
If you don’t have Bird in your top 10, you are wrong. Players like Shaq and Jordan have talked about Bird and they should know. Shaquille O'Neal has said that as he learned more about Bird he “realized that, hey, he [Larry Bird] is one of the greatest players ever. And it's not luck. It's all skill.” And Michael Jordan has said, "People ask me all the time who my all-time top players are. And when I start saying Larry, they interrupt me. They say, "You've got to be kidding me. He can't play with LeBron James." I tell them, "You guys don't get it. Larry is far better than any small forward who played the game." . Shawn David of the BTM Basketball Time Machine also has Bird in his top 2.
You also need to come to an understanding of what players endured in the years before today’s pampered, overpaid players who only play for money. Today they have “load management”,” there have been medical advancements, dietary regimes, and they fly private. Players used to travel commercial airplanes where a 6’10” guy might sit in coach class for hours
Currently the back-to-back games a player might play ranges from a low of 13 to a high of 14.4 sets per season compared to the early 80’s where they routinely played 20 to 22 back-to-back sets per season. There were also grueling stretches where they played 4 games in 5 nights and occasionally even 3 games in 3 nights.
And the game has changed since the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Rule changes now greatly favored the offence; fouls are called much more often especially if a player with clout complains enough. Assists are counted with a leniency not granted in the past. So stats are affected as well. A player can take multiple steps and/or dribbles compared to the time when the rules were much more stringently enforced and traveling seems to be allowed more now as well.
