Lots of good wisdom here. My approach to teaching a woman who has decided to arm herself (or anyone) is “no unpleasant surprises.” Let her try a few guns, watch me shoot first, see what recoil she’ll tolerate, see what fits her. One petite lady friend years ago tried my 4 inch .38 Diamondback with Pachmayer Compacs and fell in love. Kind of hard to find those at shows today.🙄 My wife is a big ex cop who carried a Model 66 on duty, so she carries a couple of J-frames. I’d rather see a lady carry a .22 she can shoot well than a cannon she can’t. Life has a way of diverting us from that practice we need.

Got my first J Frame in my ‘68 rookie year for off duty, used my issued Colt Detective Spl in a ‘74 gunfight w/three armed robbery suspects & the retirement EDC is a 340PD.

The snubbie will teach you humility. For some reason I love them anyway.

I’ve been shooting mostly the 1911, Beretta M9, and full size revolvers for a long time. I certainly agree with your comments on snubbies. For my purposes the Ruger SP101 is the only snubbie I own that gives me really great accuracy for my typical training routines that include two-handed double action out to 15 yards, single-handed double action out to 7 yards, and single-handed, weak hand shooting out to 5 yards. I like their reliability and durability over pocket semi-autos but I don’t recommend them to my friends that aren’t experienced shooters.

My very first handgun I purchased in 1985 was a Taurus model 85 stainless 2 inch barrel 38 special 21 Oz unloaded and I used to shoot Target WaD cutters.. they were Carol reloads from Carol reloading company sold at my gun shop for $3.50 a box.. and I shot and shot and shot and learned how to handle that revolver and shoot great groups of the 40-50 ft after some practice.. and that's where my love of the snub nose revolver came from..

I started my wife with a 432uc loaded with 32 S&w long and stepped her up to H&r after 50 rounds. She was air force but hated every auto loader due to size in her hand and she is uncomfortable with anything else other than a DA trigger. She enjoys shooting now

Thanks for passing along your knowledge of snub nose revolvers. People that buy them as a first gun and shoot 10 or 20 rounds with it then don't touch it again until it is a necessity are making a mistake.
They truly do require some consistent training until everything becomes second nature.
I try to practice either pulling and holstering, dry-fire or reloading most every day. In addition I will shoot at minimum 10 rounds twice a week.
Long story short, it really is helpful to have people like yourselves sharing your wisdom.

There are so many are chair experts that don't know what they don't know. I'm 80 and still pick up something.

I've carried a S&W 640, 38 spl since the early 90's, when it was recommended to me by Col Rex Applegate. I still carry it daily.
