  Scientist here. Horseshoe crab blood is not used to sterilize things, but rather to Test sterility. Their blood will clot and turn turbid (cloudy) when it encounters what's known as endotoxins, or fragments of bacterial cell wall. The speed and intensity of this reaction can then be measured to quantify how much endotoxin is present in a sample. It is an extremely sensitive method thats the gold standard for many pharmaceutical, medical, and aerospace applications.

  The thing that impresses me most about you is how you Genuinely care for the entire ecosystem and the future of your livelihood.  I see so many fishermen who act like tomorrow is not going to come, and would have kept every light crab, and probably scraped the eggs off the eggers!  I am around fisherman a lot more than crabbers, but it just baffles me!  Thanks for the field trip!!  And thanks a whole lot more for teaching people how things should be done. The fact that you say you catch a bunch of now filled crabs with thumbprints is proof that you’re making good decisions by not taking them at the wrong time.

  Accurate Horseshoe crab anatomy . They have 4 types of "eyes"  3 on the main shell . Two on the top pair for vision, one for light sensitivity moon and season detection, one for seeing things.  One on the bottom near the mouth parts. The most strange placement are the Teslon Receptiors on the tail spike which are used for day/night detection.

  I'm 55 and never even heard of a tongue bug. I could have gone another 55 years without knowing hearing of them. LOL Thanks Luke. Very informational video.

  The tongue louse actually doesn’t eat the tongue. Once it enters the mouth through the gills, it clamps down tight on the tongue and cuts off the blood supply, causing necrosis. Once the tongue dies, the louse becomes the tongue.

  The spot fish you showed is one of the fish I grew up on. About 65 years ago there was a man who came through our neighborhood with a horse and cart selling fish. He used the cart during the week to pick up trash. He would clean it out and lay a tarp in the cart with a wooden ice box. It would be full of ice from the ice house, and fish. The two main fish would be spot and butter fish. I have traveled many places since those days, eaten many different seafoods but I still love the smaller spot and butter fish the best. I tell my grandchildren that if a seafood market don’t have spot and butter fish it ain’t no seafood market!
