Though it looks like an ordinary mirror, patterns or sacred figures engraved on the reverse side mysteriously appear in the reflection.

During the Edo period, under the ban on Christianity, Kakure Kirishitan (Hidden Christians) are said to have used mirrors engraved with the image of Christ. By shining light onto the mirror, the figure of Christ would be projected, allowing them to pray in secret. To avoid suspicion, the reverse was often covered with a lid featuring harmless decorative patterns.

Today, magic mirrors are valued not only as rare religious artifacts, but also as exceptional examples of Japan’s advanced casting techniques and spiritual culture. Experience the mysterious beauty of light and shadow captured within this extraordinary mirror.

As someone who has polished Aluminum to a mirror finish a few times, there is a good reason why he is the last one doing it like that.

What this doesn’t show is the most important part — the making of the molds. Without good molds, nothing else can happen.

My dream of buying one to support the artist has collapsed with remarkable efficiency... much like my ability to actually afford it...

The "forbidden mirrors of Japan" generally refer to Magic Mirrors, or Makyo. These are traditional bronze mirrors crafted during the Edo period (1603–1867) that appear to be solid, reflective metal, but project a hidden image—often religious—onto a wall or surface when a beam of light hits them

From my many years in China and Indonesia its common for work being done on the ground, as if work benches are illegal.

The video showed the production, but the main point was missing. The magic is that the light projected onto the wall makes the image on the back of the mirror appear.

With modern tech and industrial equipment these can be pissed out by the millions in a factory, and they would sell for hardly more than the copper's value. But I could never buy that knowing this art exists. Each piece perfectly crafted by hands with muscle memory so strong that he could do it just by touch. That's true craftmanship!
