My Father used to play piano, and his favourite composer was Rachmaninoff.

The music of Rachmaninoff, who died the year before I was born, spoke directly to my soul the first time I heard it and has done so ever since. May he Rest in Peace. His legacy is a blessing to mankind.

On an a.m radio, in 1958, a 3 am broadcast from Akron, OH.; I heard the first classical music of my life. It was Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto # 2. I was 18. My love for classical music, and most especially for Rachmaninoff, has enriched and encouraged me since.
Your telling of his life has made him more. Thank you Dr. Yorston. 😊

Thank you so much for this. He composes some of those mesmerising pieces that make me stop what I'm doing when they appear on the radio. As he's your favourite composer, Professor, I have an excerpt from a newspaper clipping for you. My cousin, a piano student, is one of the "young ladies" taken to a Rachmaninoff concert in San Diego, California, by her teacher in March 1931:

"It is needless to say that the concert was greatly enjoyed and that the young ladies gained much of value through hearing this great artist. The report is brought back that the concert was "wonderful," the program being especially well chosen and played in such a manner as to hold the large audience in the Russ auditorium spellbound. Throughout some of the delicate, softer passages there was almost a breathless stillness which the audience seemed reluctant to break as the last faint tones floated away into nothingness. Following the concert Mrs. Stoddard took her pupils backstage where they were introduced to Mr. Rachmaninoff. This world-renowned artist, unlike some great personages, is very genial and kindly. He talked with the girls and after shaking hands with them very graciously autographed their programs which they will keep and treasure highly through the years to come."
