Watching from Vienna, Austria. I love all your visual essays. As a former literature grad student, I deeply appreciate the way you bring writers, artists, and composers to life with such beautiful narration, imagery, and music. Your work is incredibly thoughtful, inspiring, and wonderfully articulated. Thank you for creating these ❤

Ive met several women artists who gave up their own art to support that of their husband. Such an unnecessary sacrifice and a sad loss to them and to us. Thankyou for a lovely sensitive account of Mahlers life. Composers depend on others to perform their work and convey it to the world. No wonder so many seem tormented as conductors.

Mahler met with several other famous composers of his era, including Peter Tchaikovsky, Johannes Brahms, and of course Anton Bruckner. Others include: a long-standing friendship with Richard Strauss, a one-time meeting with Jean Sibelius, plus Arnold Schoenberg, Hugo Wolf, Ferruccio Busoni, Antonin Dvorak, and Hans Pfitzner.
While in the U.S., Mahler traveled by passenger train with his orchestra & conducted performances in Boston, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Utica, Springfield (MA), Hartford (CT). His salary in the U.S. was reportedly twice as lucrative as compared to Vienna.
Side note: Gustav had a younger brother Alois, born in 1867, who worked as a representative for a candy company in Vienna. He also changed his name to Hans Christian, later relocating to Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. in 1910, and eventually died there of stomach cancer in 1931, age 63.

What is very important to note is that his Father was a Cantor.
Hebrew and Yiddish Musical Themes show up in Mahler's Lieder. His song cycles. Especially in Der Kindertotenlieder. Songs on The Death of Children.
His lyricist Ruckert was a wonderful poet, by the way.

So Mahler may have been less than religious, but he knew he was a Jew.
It was a very old game for Jewish Composers and Classical Musicians to convert, so that they could work in Europe. Especially in Germany and The Austro -Hungarian Empire.
And previously in Austria.
My Great Grandfather Josef Zapolinksy was a musician, teacher and composer.
He left Europe in the Early 1900s, rather than play that game.
He built pianos, organs, repaired these instruments and tuned them. And he wrote Jewish Liturgical Music. He had a Men's Jewish Liturgical Choir in Boston, MA. My family always has musicians and singers, including me.
Here's an interesting gambit: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is rumored to have Jewish Ancestry. The rumor is that Queen Catherine approach Leopold Mozart and told him: Your Daughter and Son are very able musicians, but they won't get anywhere as Jews. Get yourself and them Baptized. There may be some truth to that rumor. Why? There are no Baptismal Records in the Mozart Family previous to Leopold.
There are several Monographs written about the influence of Jewish Music in Gustav Mahler's work.

I am a singer. I sang selections from Der Kindertotenlieder in My Voice Jury at University. Beautiful work. As is his Lieder, Lied Von Der Erde. Songs of The Earth.
