Metroid Prime 4 is Underwhelming

Fun fact, if you try to grind for green crystals before going into the Great Mines, the meter showing how many crystals you have just stops and won't go higher until you finish the mines.
Realizing that and noticing more crystals spawning after story moments really highlighted how railroaded the game was on my first playthrough. This game does everything in its power to make sure exploring is not worth the effort until you have progressed the story far enough to let you do everything.

That article was straight damage control. I never saw one single person say they wanted open world metroid online. Not one. Ever

The “Soulless Valley” chapter name is actually brilliant.

Remember, Nintendo isn't completely afraid of having Samus speak. She did speak in Dread, albeit only once and in the Chozo tongue. If anything I suspect leaving her strictly silent was a decision made because it's a Prime game. Samus has been sharing her thoughts in mainline games since Super (see the pre-Ceres prologue), but the Prime trilogy always had her as strictly silent.

Dread did pretty well with a 'less is more' approach to expression, focusing a lot on body language that speaks a thousand words. And I loved how delightfully dismissive she was when faced against a couple of bosses that she was clearly unimpressed by, just lazily charging up her beam (cannon not even 'at ready', just having her arm loosely hanging at her side) as she paced about, not taking her opponent seriously. And the simple shots seeing her eyes through the visor when she realizes "oh, @#$%!" facing against a foe she legitimately feels in danger against -- the elite Chozo warrior Raven Beak, a kind of opponent she never thought she'd ever be doing battle with. The Chozo taught her what she knows about her combat style, after all, and she's up against a master of the art. Moreover, the Chozo are SUPPOSED to be friendly to her.

And of course, even if you had your doubts, getting to the final battle absolutely justifies Samus's momentary loss of composure, because he is a devilishly hard final boss.

I also find the area transitions in that game tend to have the silence speak volumes. You can't hear it, but you just know that there's something going on up there in her head. Probably a lot of things.

This may have been Retro's decision to make Samus as much of a 'blank slate' as possible.

It’s crazy how Kensuke Tanabe straight up doesn’t understand Metroid despite making four games now

"Samus Goes to the DMV to obtain a Motorcycle License"

Which has the same energy as the "Kirby Files his Taxes" meme from awhile ago, but its real this time....

this game may have been deeply disappointing, but the sheer amount of cynical video essays i've gotten to consume as a result has been well worth it 🍿🍿🍿

30:09 I dont understand why they named the area Flare Pool when the volcano is actually named in-game as Magdrahda. Thats a much cooler name

Bro the bike was warning sign #1. Samus has a Gunship, but they got her on some motorbike driving through a desert, the warning lights were going wild. Then Miles and Co. were showed off, and expectations cratered. And from what I've seen you got BOTW shrines, bad suits, annoying NPC chime-ins, and linear hallways. The very names of the locations are sub-par. Volt Forge. Fury Green. Sol Desert. LAME. View-ros, LAME. The discount Luminoth, LAME. The lack of Sylux and meaningful stakes, LAME. Man Prime 3 managed to have tons of Talking NPCs but not be annoying.... Then again, that was Old Retro. 18 years is a LONG time.
