  I bought the top-of-the-line Philips stereo system in 1987: a tuner, AV receiver and double cassette deck. All were made by Marantz in Japan. In 1988 I bought a matching CD player, the CD473. That was the second-highest in line in the Philips 1987/88 catalog. The CD-960 was the highest but it was almost twice as expensive as the CD473. The CD473 was made in Belgium, and was still a VERY good CD player; it sounded just as good as the CD960 so I figured it would save me a bunch of money without sacrificing any quality. I never regretted it.<br>I recently saw a video of someone repairing a 960 and now I regret my choice even less: The transport is a pain the the you-know-what to take apart and repair. It uses wires to control the drawer because someone at Marantz decided they didn&apos;t want the sound of the gears when the drawer opened or closed.<br>By the way, I also have a preproduction CD-100 with a CDM0 transport, and it also still works and sounds great, after traveling from the Netherlands to Spain, from Spain back to the Netherlands and from the Netherlands to the USA, all without transport lock screws in place.

  In 1987 I had a Philips CD350 player (14 bit ) and Keff Carlton 3 speakers with a Philips class A amp as my first stereo, it probably would stand up to modern audiophiles in sound quality

  Late to the CD game, I bought one of these new in 1990 as my first CD player. If I had not found a dealer offering them on sale, I likely would have bought a Philips-made Magnavox unit instead. All these years (and a few belt changes) later, the CD960 still going strong. Unlike all of my friends I elected to hang on to my vinyl (my CD player purchase was actually delayed by a turntable upgrade). These days I still enjoy both LPs and CDs in addition to my other sources.

  I still have my very first CD player, a Philips CD104 in mint condition with original fixed phono lead, original box, packing materials, Philips CD cleaning cloth, plastic bags, manuals, leaflets etc. I bought it in Lasky&apos;s, Tottenham Court Road, London.

  I still have my 1989 Sony Cdp 605 esd $1k back in 89 but with the Sony BU1 mech 3 beam laser and Philips TDA 1541 dac chip still love it ! Thanks for thr video
