I was brought up in Dubai, and I can attest to the fact that no matter what, people who are either born or brought up in the UAE, they just don't want to leave. Now that my wife and I have been in Canada for over 6 years (she was also born and brought up in the UAE), we yearn to be back. In fact after having 2 kids we also want them to experience UAE, even though it's not the same as it was when we were young. But it feels like "HOME".

As for what Fahad was saying about not being able to read Urdu, I so agree. When my family moved to Karachi for some time when I was 12, I literally could not read anything in Urdu, but I could easily read Arabic as if it was second nature. Today, I can read and write and both ways, but it's kind of automatic to slip back into the Arabic writing style instead of Urdu. To be honest, for the longest time I would even write Urdu as if i was writing in Arabic, and I would often be asked if I was writing Arabic or Urdu. So relatable.

Yes I totally agree....As an Indian expat, an Emariti has always treated me with more respect than any other nationality....I was in Emariti group at University for a marketing project, and the girls were so so kind. Even at workplace they were the nicest, especially when it came to reprimanding they would be very respectful....people of other nationalities would like just like openly criticise n even yell at times.

Mad respect to my Emirates brothers, sisters, and cousins!

I would like to clarify one point about MADFOON (SHIWA شواء). It is prepared with a special blend of Omani spices known as Tabzirah تبزيرة عمانية, which takes more than 10 days to make. Thankfully, my mother can prepare it at home.

SHIWA is considered one of the authentic Omani dishes not pure Emiratie

1:12:50 Mahreen is correct. Hindustani was the lingua franca of North India, which because of Mughal influence included a lot of Persian and Arabic words. The name Urdu was first called by poet Ghulam Mushafi around 1780 where he said the language of his poem is Urdu or Hindavi (Hindavi was another name for Hindustani). In 1837, British East India Company made Urdu one of their official languages of communication with the Mughal empire. Linguistically, Hindustani is classified as "pluricentric" language with two official forms — Hindi and Urdu. Both are spoken same colloquially but when it comes to formality, Hindi derives more words from Sanskrit while Urdu from Persian and Arabic.
Upon India's independence from British, it was decided that Hindustani would be "national" language of independent India written in Devnagri and Perso-Arabic scripts. However, then partition happened. Pakistan called their national language "Urdu" and India settled on no "national" language but dual official languages — English and Hindi. (See constituent assembly debates and Maulana Azad's committee on languages.)
