Andrew Marr - you are a very lucky man to have been able to talk to him and watch him work.

I had to laugh out loud at Michael Prodger's final assessment of David as an artist - because everything he said David's art is not, is exactly what his art IS to me (and many others). Saying David Hockney was NOT a great artist is like saying Miles Davis was not a great trumpeter... it's ridiculous. I love many great artists, from Van Gogh to Rubens to Michaelangelo - but no other artist's work simultaneously stimulates, fascinates or evokes more feeling (to me) than David Hockney. For me he is not only a great artist, he is the greatest - because he is the artist who achieved the most feeling in his art by doing the least. Just like Miles David did on trumpet.

So I'm with Andrew Marr: David Hockney was an art genius.

5:49 all artists may have that compulsion but the energy and ability to go non stop like that is something different

I agree with Andrew Marr. David Hockney changed the way I looked at nature and faces.

He will be remembered as one of the of the most accomplished, tenacious and joyful artists of the 20th century. He was a great draftsman, his pencil portraits rivals those of Ingres. His sketchbooks are simply wonderful! And his late paintings of the Yorkshire landscape show a sureness of touch and vision that are just wonderful.

I bumped in to David Hockney in Normandy a couple of years ago. I didn't want to be a nuisance but couldn't let slip the opportunity to meet one of my art heroes and we had a brief conversation. He was very gracious and even curious (I was very obviously on a cycling holiday) and I thank him for that.

I love his devotion to learning, exploring art in many ways, sharing knowledge and posing excellent questions. I love the evolution of his art work. I love the iPad work, because of his joy of color and place. I understand your exploring the difference of pen to paper or paint to canvas, However he found ways to try new things, exploring many avenues of art expression. I love his ability to explore and teach us in his books and interviews about art history and art making. He will not be forgotten. He inspires me and the feeling of the love of life and joy, he made me happy and he made me happy to make art and “Get up and work immediately “. He did change the way I see things. Thank you for a lovely show. Thank you for a life full of joyful inspiration and reflections of “every picture is an act of love”.

I really enjoyed this interview. It was fascinating to hear two such contrasting perspectives, which offered a deeper insight into David, not just as an inspiring artist, but as a poetic, progressive figure with a profound sense of self-expression.

Like Picasso, Hockney was an artist in every sense. Both started out as superb draftsmen, but discovered that this wasn't all there was to art. You can look at the sketch books of both and see an idea being worked on, improved and developed, taken on upwards, and if necessary destroyed. Most artists have one big idea. Great artists never stop developing and 'taking their line for a walk'. I'm sure he was among the greats, which Andrew at least understood.

I look forward to going to the Serpentine exhibition in July. I have wanted to go to a Hockney exhibition for a long time. My heart says that I will agree with Andrew Marr about his work. We shall see 😊
