How the Houthis Survived America’s War in Yemen

In the waters of the southern Red Sea, multi-billion-dollar Western warships patrol with the most advanced radar arrays on earth, yet their crews remain on high alert. A swarm of low-cost suicide drones and anti-ship ballistic missiles streaks across the horizon. A single command issued from an undisclosed mountain bunker has paralyzed a trillion-dollar maritime trade artery, forcing international shipping giants to detour around an entire continent. At the center of this geopolitical earthquake stands an invisible warlord whose coordinates remain an impenetrable secret: Abdul-Malik al-Houthi. How did a quiet, 28-year-old insurgent—thrust into command in 2004 after his charismatic brother was killed in a mountain cave—transform a crushed, impoverished tribal militia into an asymmetric regional power? Over two decades of relentless warfare, al-Houthi survived the brutal "Six Saada Wars," outmaneuvered seasoned political rivals, formed an audacious tactical alliance with former dictator Ali Abdullah Saleh to capture Sanaa in 2014, and then ruthlessly liquidated Saleh when he attempted to switch sides. Defying a punishing multi-year aerial blitz by a Saudi-led coalition, he leveraged subterranean redoubts, domestic reverse-engineering, and Iranian technical support to construct a long-range missile and drone arsenal capable of striking Riyadh, Tel Aviv, and international shipping lanes. In this Profile documentary, we trace the full, untold trajectory of the reclusive commander of Ansar Allah: ▪️ The Mountain Dynasty: Hasani Sayyids, Zaydi theology, and the radical seeds of the Believing Youth. ▪️ The Trial by Fire: How the Six Saada Wars forged a disciplined, underground military architecture. ▪️ Storming Sanaa: The political vacuum, fuel protests, and the unholy alliance that toppled the capital. ▪️ The Arsenal of the Poor: How cheap drones and reverse-engineered missiles countered Western air superiority. ▪️ The Red Sea Stranglehold: Confronting Operation Prosperity Guardian, targeting global trade, and surviving superpower pressure.
