  Historian here. I&apos;m not a early-modernist, but I am working on a doctorate in European history, and my understanding of the twitter-like discourse around Luther (and to your question of &quot;why didn&apos;t they just kill him?&quot;) is that Luther was specifically critiquing the parts of the Church that had to do with collecting and hoarding money, and his critique was appealing to a number of local lords and landowners who saw his theological movement as an opportunity to not pay tithes to what was essentially a foreign political power. In other words (and very simplistically--again, not an early-modernist), he was protected by the wealthy because his message served their interests.
