"No one summed up better what The Old Guard of Arlington means for our nation than Sergeant Major of the Army Dan Dailey. He shared a story with me about taking a foreign military leader through Arlington to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Sergeant Major Dailey said, “I was explaining what The Old Guard does and he was looking out the window at all those headstones. After a long pause, still looking at the headstones, he said, ‘Now I know why your soldiers fight so hard. You take better care of your dead than we do our living.’”

Tom Cotton - U.S. Senator from Arkansas and Author, Sacred Duty: A Soldier’s Tour at Arlington National Cemetery

Only the guard relief commander wears rank insignia - the Tomb Guards wear no rank - so as to never out-rank the unknowns

When your duty is done at the tomb of the unknown..
It's extremely emotional.
It's an extreme honor to be chosen to guard the tomb of the unknown.

The weapons are actual service weapons that have been used in the past and maintained. The inspection is for cleanliness and serviceability. This includes not just for the weapon but the uniform. The Tomb Sentinel are expected to achieve perfection.

The first 24-hour guard was posted on midnight, 2 July 1937. The Tomb of the Unknowns has been guarded continuously, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, since that time. Inclement weather, terrorist attacks, and more have never caused the watch to cease

The Tomb Guard Badge is the rarest award in the U.S. military (other than Astronaut Badge.)

Arlington National Cemetary is indeed where the Tomb is! When you go there, it's very humbling. The graves seem to go on forever, and there are moments when you see names you recognize and realize those men you read about as a youngster are entombed right at your feet.

Then you walk over to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and there are no names, just these men watching over them. It'll get you every time.

That leg movement helps snap the metal in their heals together. If you go in person, the sound is almost like tap shoes

Nobody has FA'd enough to FO if those rifles are loaded. Tomb guards wear no rank that might be higher than one of the fallen.

The changing of the guard is a spectacle to see. The movement is like clockwork, and timing is exact.
