Truly one of the best videos on this topic that Ive ever seen! Your thoughtful inspection and insights that only a hobbyist can bring to a natural habitat is truly remarkable,. Just can't say enough how inspiring and fascinating this video was. Thanks for this awesome video!

Way to go BA. Love the footage of the wild reefs, so many options for substrate, thanks for the inspiration as always.

I use an 3d aquarium background as my substrate. It functions similarly to a bare bottom while looking much more realistic.

I've been considering a reef with only a few specific coral species to emulate a small section of a far larger reef structure. Basically take a snap shot of a natural reef. One idea was a sloping rock structure starting on the right side at ground level with corse sand followed by rubble then into the structure where encrusting monti, just one color and allow it to go in all directions. Down into the rubble zone and up the slope. from there may be a row of caps to shade out any encroaching encrusting monti. Above the caps would the digitata.

That was a great vid. Feels so rare (maybe i watch the wrong creators) to see a genuine dive into the thinking, research and creativity that happens before acquiring the hardscape materials. That rubble will also provide a massive boost in surface area and micro life in the tank. Be interesting to see if that benefits the larger corals.

3:20 Looking at this shot, i love the calm neutral colors of the sand, rock, over which there is an animate pattern provided by the light penetrating the surface of the water. The fish provide a splash of color.
All too often, home aquariums are all color. Zero sand, too many colorful corals, too many colorful fish, all adding up to sensory overload. There is no sense of calm.

Another great video adam! Giving me some ideas on what to do with the next tank! The coral rubble dominated areas look fantastic, id almost forgotten what it looked like on the reefs. I have vivid memories of sitting in the shallow end of fish rock cave being pushed back and forth with the swell of the current watching the coral rubble being tossed back and forth just like at the end of the video. Emulating this in an aquarium would look great.
