Great points Rob.
And I too get absolutely sick and tired when I tell people my wife and I are planning on Retiring in South Africa and the first thing they say is “ oh gosh is that safe?” it’s literally the first thing every single person says. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Lived here for 54 years and agree your tips are sensible. South Africa is a great place and very friendly. Don't put temptations out there but enjoy life without your phone taking over! You will probably look like a tourist because of clothing and your less sun beaten looks so best to rely on sensible tactics like those suggested.

Just north of Cape Town is the West Coast which is full of towns & villages which are very much safer than most in SA. There are a lot of towns right on the coast & there have been a lot of up-market developments in many areas. Much nicer than CT itself & easy to get there if necessary

Great advice Rob,with regards to Uber I had an experience while using Uber when I connected my Caxton card to make payments I found I was being charged for Uber eats in maybe half a dozen occasions when I hadn't ordered any food! So maybe I was unlucky but tend to pay cash when using Uber or Bolt, however no problem at all in Sedgefield as they aren't any Uber or Bolt!

@jamesandrob great video and as you say being prepared and keeping your wits about you will significantly lessen chances of being a victim of crime.
FYI: Bolt was founded in Estonia and I believe is fairly common in mainland Europe (I’ve used it in Portugal and Spain).

Good information! , but sad at the same time, however I bought me invisible jacket at Walmart , when you wear it nobody sees you and that makes a total difference , so go n have fun !

All sound advice. To add; if you're driving, South Africa has it fair share of bad drivers - drive defensively and avoid road rage and confrontation with other drivers. Lastly, pepper spray is legal and sold over the counter here. You'll probably never need it, but it's inexspensive and good to have if you're hiking/running/cycling by yourself or in a more remote area.
