Unfortunately, since you didn't buy a boerieroll from a shopping centre parking lot, you have yet to experience South Africa

What I’m taking away from this series is that Jamie’s next family vacation or his future retirement might be in South Africa.

Glad you got the biltong from a biltong shop in a brown paper bag, and not the pre-packed biltong. There is a major difference. I just hope you got it with some fat on it.

Brings me almost to tears seeing CapeTown. It is, without question, my favorite city. Period. Unfortunately, it is also very far away and expensive to visit for us. We were there just over a year ago for a third visit and I'm so jealous, nicely so though. I doubt we'll see her again as our ability to return continues to dimish with age and finances. I feel truly blessed to have visited and will forever remain grateful to the people there and the memories that endure. Thank you boys for this series, l have loved every second.

The history of the Cape Malays (and their food) is a textbook example of how colonial powers loved boxing very different people under one convenient label. The Dutch didn’t call them “Malay” because they were ethnically Malay from Sumatra (Indonesia) or the Malay Peninsula (Malaysia), but because it was a catch-all term for “brown Muslims from the East.”

In reality, the Cape Malay community is deeply creole. Genetic and historical records point to a mix of South Asian (Bengali and South Indian), Malagasy, East African, and Indonesian ancestry (mainly Javanese and Bugis). That complexity shows clearly in the food that it’s not strictly “Malay cuisine,” but a rich fusion shaped by displacement and survival.

Ironically, Malay supremacists in Malaysia take pride in the name and assume Cape Malays are simply their descendants. But the label itself is a colonial artifact, a reminder of how empire flattened identities for convenience. What survives today isn’t a distant Malay offshoot, but a unique culture forged from many worlds.

As a Capetonian I can honestly say you got a tourism Gatsby experience by going to the waterfront for it. You should have gone somewhere all the locals go
