The buttons with the ring on the shank was sewn on the inside of the jacket for spares in case the had lost one, great finds!!

When I was at catering college in 1969, my white cotton waiters jacket had blue buttons of the same type. The button shank goes through the hole and you thread the ring on. I still have it, but not sure where the buttons are. I reckon you found the burn pile. Your rifle round looks like '.303 British'. Good finds, you both did well.
