  I have been prospecting for a few decades now and quite a few years ago, I heard about roasting your black sand on a show with George Massie. I took his cast iron trick a step further. I&apos;m a blacksmith and I used to take my old rivet forge and hand cranked blower and we would roast our black sand in an old cast iron dutch oven. We usually get just fine flour gold on the fraser river and it made sense that there must be microscopic gold hiding in that black sand. I would get a good hardwood fire going in the forge and toss the dutch oven full of sand on and heat it slowly until the oven was just starting to show a bit of a cherry red and keep it there for awhile, usually about 15 minutes or so. We would go to bed and let it cool overnight and in the morning, there was usually a little button or bead of gold in the bottom of the oven.<br>The rivet forge would get hot enough to melt the gold but not the magnetite and it would pool in the rounded bottom of the oven. Craig and I both had kids so we saved those buttons and beads for christmas money.

  Have &nbsp;you heard of the roller mill technique developed in Yukon? &nbsp;A couple cups.put in a roller mill ie rod .mill turns about 60 rpm for.6 or 7 minutes &nbsp;the rods shoppers black sands into small partials and flatten gold then straining the sand and gold mix through a screen &nbsp; the black sands fall through and the enlarged gold is caught. Recovery was increased 33 to 50 %

  70yr old prospector here <br><br>I&apos;ve been chasin the yeller devil for over 50yrs now. &nbsp;I roast my sulfides before I smelt them. Nice video but I&apos;d suggest wearing a respirator mask when roasting. &nbsp;That smoke that comes off the sulfides (an smelting) is some really nasty stuff. I&apos;ve been smelting for over 40yrs it gets all the yeller devil 😊. &nbsp;Again nice video don&apos;t let that yeller devil gets the best of ya

  This is a good way to get nuggets out of quartz to, get it red hot, quench it and the quartz turns to mush, and you can almost break it up with your hands. Another YouTuber had a video on it, &quot;quartz from gold hack&quot;.

  How cool! I know more now than I ever have before about mining gold. A small and possibly not helpful idea--a lid on the cast iron pan would hold the heat in and making the roasting more efficient and faster but also protect against the &quot;pop rocks&quot; and keep them contained.
