San Antonio is the 7th largest city in America. Most people can't even name 3 things about it. What do you think went wrong — did the railroads kill it, or was it always destined to live in Dallas and Houston's shadow? Drop your thoughts below.

I'm a Texas guy and I've lived in Houston, Dallas, Waco, San Marcos and San Antonio. I live in Santa Fe now but San Antonio would be my first choice if I were moving back to the state. It's got the River Walk and H•E•B and The Hill Country right next door.

San Antonio won its independence from Mexico and became a Republic somewhat and very similar to what we today call the United States of America. The Republic of Texas stayed a Republic and governed itself for 9 years before the United States came to this Republic and persuaded Texas to come and join the United States. The United States and The Republic of Texas bargained for several months over many issues and in the end of negotiations The Republic of Texas had won the right to fly the Texas Flag at the same height as the United States flag. Another point that Texas won in negotiations was that should they ever decide to split the state up they could divide into as many as 5 states, should they ever decide to.

The background of growth in San Antonio in this piece was not nearly close to being honest. Recognized civic leaders in the 1970’s organized and actively engaged in pursuing clean new businesses to bring to San Antonio. This group added to the tourism sector with Sea World, Six Flags, and was in the final shakeout of Disney World with Florida.

There residential growth to the North and Northwest is due to the topography. Having been involved in the residential development and construction world for 30 years I have seen the development and growth of San Antonio and it grew like it was supposed to. Residential construction most always will be to the higher ground and away from wherever the sewer plant is located. If you build below the sewer plant then you’ll have to build a pumping station which makes everything more expensive. The higher ground surrounding San Antonio is to the North, Northwest, and the Northeast.

San Antonio is a melting pot and the population has grown and today the Air Force pilots are trained here at Randolph Air Force Base. All Air Force recruits are trained here at Joint Base Lackland. The Army trains their medical personnel at Fort Sam Houston. San Antonio is very much a military city with many proud retired veterans here.

San Antonio sits on top of the Edwards Aquifer, one of the largest in the country. So not sure I agree with the premise that the location doesn’t make sense.

I was raised in San Antonio & live in New Braunfels. Don't believe your friends. The West Side & South Side are the oldest parts neighborhoods of San Antonio. Most residents lived in these areas are 6 to 8 generations. They are very protective of their neighborhood as people are in Southern Calif. These families have pride on their rich history & leery of strangers due to the close proximity to downtown & prison. They are very patriotic.

In San Antonio, when you sneeze in the grocery store, you always get a , but here you get many "GOD blessings." We are a city of faith and family values. We know how to party -- check out our yearly FIESTA, but you won't find us rioting, destroying property and misbehaving. When our beloved Spurs win big, watch how we celebrate. Faith and family values prevail. This is primarily a Christian city, but all faiths are respected. I am 80 yrs old, and not as strong and independent as I once was. I have ALWAYS gotten help, care and concern from strangers. Not long ago, I felt dizzy in the parking lot, and a mom and her teenage son were right there, helping me. The word "Texas" or "Tejas" originally was an indigenous tribe--the word means "friendly." We have a history of respect between races and cultures. We get along and care for each other. Our women are pretty, and our men are strong and handsome. We love our children, and even if we indulge them a bit too much, they just might have a "chancla" hurled at them when mama has had enough. Our food is the best--there is nothing like it anywhere in the world. Like other cities, we have our share of crime and mayhem, but we have a aspecial vibe here. We are the heart and soul of the State of Texas. The Alamo isn't just a tourist attraction--t's a sacred site of bravery, honor and sacrifice.

I would describe us as a subtropical valley. We have greenbelts and parks designed to prevent major flooding in neighborhoods.

It was also a huge ranching area. The County Roads are called FMs. Farm to markets. Steer were gathered there and followed the roads to Kansas and Wyoming/Montana.

I used to live in DC and then Virginia when I was little and San Antonio was everything people talked about. Not forgotten at all.
