  I have 6 chickens and run the deep litter system myself. The coop is cleaned out once a year and the bedding is mixed into the compost bins, along with grass and vegetable scraps, to go through its final "cook". It is a simple system that works and I would encourage anyone to consider using it...

  That “one afternoon” is two at my home. Spring and fall. That one afternoon is a rough full day but worth it.

  My little prefab coops windows were small, so I put solar fan air going in through two fans on one end and two solar exhaust pulling the air going out the other end at the highest point under roof I could. I also add a rechargeable portable small fan and hung it on the outside to push the air even more. There are side windows which are fairly large to keep open in summer but closed in winter leaving the top fans and exhaust fans to keep air from being stagnant.

  We bought two little prefabs and what you describe is true BUT we changed many things about them before our girls ever saw them. Next we will build from scratch bit what we did (even expanded floor space) is effective and healthy.

  Put vinyl sheet flooring over the wood flooring if you have no other alternative. It has worked for us for two years thus far in the duck (way wetter) coop

  My<br>Birds have water but not a knock over type. You can teach them to use nipples or a water bottle like the type that you fill and hang upside down with a long metal spout and it drips but you put a heavy bowl or casserole dish etc underneath to catch drips. Birds do better if they’re not without at least sips of water.
