As someone who went to college for four years, spent three years paying it off, and then had to pretty much start 7 years late with an entry-level job and savings where it was when I started, I'm all for trade schools and public libraries. 😁

The main thing is to be the business owner rather than the employee. Most people cannot afford to own companies, they keep working as an employee to afford their next meal.

Boring businesses do usually make a lot of money if your business is operating properly. I recently moved back to home town after 4 decades and the guys I went to high school with who started a business are now wealthy, laughing at me for going to college.

He’s speaking in generalities. It’s true, but saying “focus on high demand jobs you are skilled at” is easy to say. Hard to spot specifically within the context of one’s life. For example, you, might spot an opportunity to go into the roof repair, but you have an inner ear issue that will make that job a death trap.

Or, if you want to go into landfills, and you don’t have an in on the local people who aggressively — and often very aggressively — defend their position in that market, you are going to discover the real world obstacles fast. At that point, you better love landfills.

Advice is nice. But it’s always more complicated. And any advice you get will be the right advice for the moment 50% of the time. The real trick is knowing — and having the discipline to follow — the right approach for the specific circumstances you find yourself in.

as someone who spent their best years breaking my back and body down in the trades, to make others rich. I always find it amusing when some random rich guy trys to explain "away" the greed that destroyed America's manufacturing base.
yes, you can make a million dollars off the backs of others. If you can get past the regulation, licensing, bonding, insurance, and other obstacles, they have put in place to keep you in debt and paying into a system that is designed to fail.

I am in the HVAC trade. I have been in this trade for almost 26 years. I dont regret it at all. We do have a severe shortage of talent. It’s only going to get worse. Data centers are getting bigger.

This is what I’m doing in trucking. The state of Georgia will pay for your CDL completely. I drove for a few companies and then got my own truck. People love to say after all expenses it’s not worth it so it’s better on the company side. False. Maybe if you only want 1 truck. The difference is you have the ability to scale as an owner operator and you don’t have to actually drive. You can hire your own company drivers. It’s less money than being a carrier operator because the split with the motor carrier that you lease on to, but the business model is profitable with margins around 30-40% if you know what you’re doing. Someone did comment most blue collar trades people don’t know how to run a business and I completely agree. It’s true in trucking as well, but if you understand then it’s a great opportunity……at least until AI replaces most of the drivers. 😂 I’ll be positioning to purchase my AI trucks.

2:53 - it’s not that I was told it was “beneath me” but I was told that if I went into trades I was “wasting my potential” and that the trades were lower-earning than degrees.

9:50 Being in the trades does take a toll on the body though - (e.g. back, knees, hearing) plus there's always the real hazard of workplace accidents. No doubt they do pay well, but it's a young person's game.

My friend is a journeyman electrician in Las Vegas, and his base rate after 6 YOE is $65 an hour.

Sadly, we were both in the military and my body just can't do what he does anymore, even being the same age.
