2 studies have completely discredited this wolf study. How could the wolf study be anything but biased. 20,000 elk sounds huge until you realize that Yellowstone is over million acres. There was no mention of the 1988 fire and normal recovery after such a huge fire is running right on schedule. The wolves didn't bring the beaver back they were brought in more than 10 years before the wolves. It turns out it's the bison that have had a negative affect on the plant life and the river. No one has said how changing the rivers house made thing better and how it wasn't just likely to have sent it in the wrong direction. Doug Smith was in charge of making the wolf release a success so how could his conclusions be anything but biased? Outside of Yellowstone wolves have only created problems Cattlemens association study concluded the cost of a rancher having wolves on his property on average cost $132,000. There is only a 1 in five chance of collecting on animals killed. He get nothing for lost weight, miscarriages from harassment, extra employees, and trying all the nonlethal that continually fail. In Idaho I have watched elk,moose, deer and pronghorn populations decrease tragically every year. I am not saying wolves are the only problem but the timing is hard to argue with. Bob Marshall went from 5,000 elk to 300 . A large portion were no doubt driven out but this is anything but an improvement. BITTERROOTS and Lolo down 80% and the Frank Church is not much better. The animals in Yellowstone that were the problem were bison not elk. And while wolves have had some impact on the bison it has not had enough to change anything.
