  Nikka came and played with our symphony as a YA winner. I think she was 13 at the time?  Her tone was so focused and beautiful and projected very evenly in all registers. I was so impressed as a fellow flutist.  She is a complete sweetheart too ❤

  Thank you for helping me prove to my Mom that I had absolutely no chance of going to college for flute performance (seriously). Around the time the TwoSet lads were born I successfully auditioned for the Shennandoah Conservatory of Music for College despite never having had a single lesson, not starting flute until I was 10 years old, my only training was public school band directors who were all trumpet players, going to a school that didn&apos;t even have an orchestra, &nbsp;and playing a piece I&apos;d never heard a recording of- having a home computer was very rare then and internet wasn&apos;t even a thing yet. No schools or libraries had recordings available, and I couldn&apos;t afford to buy a recording even if I was lucky enough to find one at the CD/cassette store. During the audition they were very impressed until they asked &quot;who do you study with&quot; and I had to answer &quot;myself.&quot; I could still enroll, but if it seemed I couldn&apos;t keep up I could be asked to leave at any time- no refunds (which at $30,000 per year when my family income was literally half of that was too risky). <br><br>I&apos;m glad I didn&apos;t go. I wouldn&apos;t have made it through the first semester. So I worked a factory job and played my Bach, Handel, and Prokofiev for myself when I had time. Just a few years later I was diagnosed with a movement disorder which had actually started 2 years after I started playing, I just didn&apos;t know it. Then I understood why I just could not do double or flutter tounging and my fingers would &quot;lock&quot; after just a few hours of practice. I can&apos;t hold a flute now (30 years later), and despite practicing 2-8 hours daily from the age of 12-19, I am starting to forget fingerings and how to read music (because of disease/medication). <br><br>Practice every day like it&apos;s the last day you will ever be able to play and never take it for granted. If you are lucky enough to get lessons learn as much as you possibly can from them. And, ENJOY every minute you get to play, even if it gets hard or frustrating. At least you are still playing!

  Always good to see a mistake and fix it. Better to have a record of the mistake, but the moves made to fix it are visible and can be appreciated.
