Crane contacting veterans who had been POWs is highly respectful.

Ivan Dixon, who played radio operator Sgt. (“Kinch”) Kinchloe was a friend of my mother’s. Both from North Carolina, they became friends in NYC as stage actors. My mother left NY as Ivan’s career took off, but they stayed in touch. When he came to CA he came to visit our family on his way to his Hogan’s Heroes role and a great career as an actor and advocate for black causes. He was quiet, erudite, and easy with a smile. I was six years old and he treated my brother, sister and I with such warmth I’ve remembered him my whole life.

Schultz was a favorite, because he was very much not a Nazi. He was a conscript whose wish was to survive and reopen his toy factory. A factory very well known since Klink knows of it instantly and expresses an interest in working there himself after the war as an accountant.

I remember in an interview before Robert Clarey passed away, he was mentioning the friendship he had with John Banner that remained after the show ended. He said that he was indeed a truly kind and caring man with a wonderful singing voice. We all loved him as SGT Schultz, but he was much more.

My go-to character was Newkirk. He was charismatic, British (I don't know why that appealed to me; this was long before I discovered the Beatles), and crafty. The video clarifies how important he was to the show--a jack of all trades who could do anything the plot required. Much credit should go to Dawson, who remained in the public eye long after the show ended.

My second go-to character would be Col. Hogan himself. Who wouldn't want to be unflappable in the face of any situation, able to talk his way out of anything, and always ready with a snappy comeback?

There was one episode where Kinch got the chance to fool Colonel Klink. He impersonated an African prince who wanted German backing for a submarine base in his fictional country. The plot twist, the real prince's wife saw through the ruse, ending up falling for Kinch.
It was a rare opportunity for Ivan Dixon to flex his acting muscles.

Both my father and stepfather were in World War II. And they both found hogan‘s heroes very affirming with full belly laughs. It was actually a special time I would sit and watch it with each of them. Fortunately, reruns ran for years, giving me this opportunity. Thank you, Hogan heroes for the connection and healing. The show provided I knew many of the actors were Jewish and in fact, Colonel Klink and his father top classical musicians.

I grew up watching this with my parents. Their generation had memories of the war so it resonated personally for them
