Hello this is Nick Nanavati. Thank you for sharing this, it’s so wonderful to see how one moment has had such an amazing impact across the entire community.

I want to share one thing about Tony, who’s really getting villainized over this. I’ve had the pleasure of playing him 2 or 3 times since then. He’s really chilled out, taken the lesson to heart and we’ve had genuinely very enjoyable games. I’m not sure if he still plays 40K. But i do want to share that his sportsmanship is reformed from what i can tell.

Thank you!

The fact he's even helping him measure out where he can place his units is what does it for me, like he's reassuring him into the mistake.

Hey, I was the judge who made the call in that game with Nick and Tony (in the 'lovely' red shirt I designed with Reece's face under a Judge Dredd helmet).

There's some additional context that would help your commentary. In Tony's game with Alex prior to this, the judges at the time ruled in Tony's favor because of his adamant push for a strict RAW interpretation of the deployment rules. I wasn't a part of that call with Alex, as I was judging another game, but because of the agitation it caused, I became aware of it after the fact. I volunteered to judge the finals, and the other judges agreed to have me active judge the game. This was partially due to the fact that I had not been connected to the prior ruling and it ruled out any question of bias toward or against either player. We very specifically wanted to avoid any impression that there was any desire to punish Tony for what happened and to preserve the professionalism of the event.

In our pre-game chat, I laid the expectation down to Nick and Tony that I would be ruling objectively, strictly with RAW, that rulings would be final, and that both players needed to commit to playing a tight game. No "intent." No mulligans. No going back in time. Nothing. Tony and Nick both agreed and committed to playing the game RAW, doing no mulligans, and not playing according to intent.

You can hear clearly from his own mouth that part of Tony's frustration at the time stemmed from the fact that he had "intended" to use the stratagem, but he hadn't done it properly. There wasn't even really a question at this point as to whether he could or could not use the stratagem - as the stratagem clearly stated exactly when it needed to be used. He made his appeal to me based on intent, and I had to remind him that he had agreed we were going off of RAW, and that he had stated he understood and explicitly agreed to that before the game started. I read the rule out loud, and walked through the exact order of operations in the stratagem, and checked it against the game state. They were two phases past the point where the stratagem could have been used. It was a clear call, and Tony was clearly frustrated by it at the time, but I stand by it. Nobody was out to get him. He had defeated himself.

Ultimately, this interaction led to the basis for which we were able to establish a standard of behavior at events. At the time, there was no code of conduct in place, and this event is what kickstarted the development and implementation of the FLG Code of Conduct. A lot of credit for that goes to John Weyermuller, who took the lead in drafting the document, but the entire judges team contributed to it. The CoC had and has its critics, but without it we would not have been able to weed out some of the now-forgotten bad eggs who consistently caused issues at events. This accountability measure gave us the ability to navigate the grey area between rules, intent, and player behavior over time. The implementation of the CoC was a huge step forward in ITC events, IMO, and contributed to the growth of the competitive scene as a whole.

I've seen this "infamous play" several times on several channels, and as someone who doesn't play Warhammer (the closest I play is Blood Bowl) I never once understood what was significant about the situation and why.

This is the first video on the matter I've seen that succinctly explains what was going on, to a level where a noob like me can FINALLY understand it.

Thank you so much!

so funny he tried to argue that it was clear what he wanted to do as if the space wolf player intended not to move his entire army.
