In a theoretical condition that both line 1 and line 2 have 20 amps, the neutral wire does not cancel anything, the return current goes back on the opposite pole. All of the current that leaves the transformer returns to the transformer. The current in the neutral wire goes back and forth just like the hot wire. The difference is that it's held at 0v or close to it by the earth ground. For example, if you measure 7 amps on line 1 and 5 amps on line 2, you get 2 amps returning to the transformer, but only on half of the cycle. On the other half, 2 amps is supplied to meet the requirement of line 1. The scenario is similar to a multi wire branch circuit with a shared neutral.

Particularly in branch circuits, I prefer to call it "return" to remind of its carrying current. "Neutral" is more suitable for service to the house (residential) because it reminds that a balanced load could be zero amps or carry a load of it is unbalanced (practically always).

I've had open neutral both on inside the house wiring and also in the feed before the meter/service panel. Also got called to a house where they had a fuse in the neutral feed.
