I can understand why you wouldn't care for it, particularly in the context of the show as a whole, but I've always loved the moment between Hurley and Rousseau in this episode. I like to think that Rousseau could see Hurley's earnestness here, that he was so clearly not hiding anything, in contrast to the lies and manipulation that she has learned to sense. If he had tried to play it cool or coerce any answer from her, she probably would have shot him, but instead he just empties his heart to her.

I believe Hurley was blessed even before coming to the island. Notice that bad things happen around him but never to him directly. He always walks away unhurt. Hurley interprets this as bad luck but think about it: first a balcony falls and he walks away fine even though other people died. His workplace gets hit by a meteor but he's not inside when it happens. And in the on island scenes they seem to go out of their way to show Hurley doing death-defying things like making it across the bridge, dodging Rouseuas traps, etc. This thread is continued by showing Hurley always wins at games and culminates in the van scene. It's ultimately also a foreshadowing of the idea that no one can die until they have fulfilled their destiny as explicitly stated to Michael when he tries to kill himself.

Hurley was the only possible protector in my opinion, and the Island knew it. Hurley, Charlie's and Jin's explosion of pure joy in the Dharma van in one of my favorite scene of the whole show. And this channel is by far my favorite one on the show as well. Don't you ever dare to stop!

The last shot of the episode with the slow pan in to the numbers on the Hatch with the building Giacchino score scares the hell out of me to this day. Despite knowing all of the answers to the mysteries.

If one wants to visit an island recreating the Lost vibe, visit Vieques, a tiny island of Puerto Rico. Formally used for military bombing testing with abandoned bunkers, radar installations , research stations allowing the jungle swallowing everything. Plus, a rare bioluminescent lagoon. An almost untouched place, full of artists, locals, cantinas, quirky, colorful architecture places. It is not a resort, it is Lost.

I actually thought when Locke revealed the cave wall in season 6 that that was the explanation for the numbers- they corresponded to the Candidates who had ended up in the 70s, with the exception of Locke who was the prophesied leader of the Others. It just now occurred to me that it isn't the reason for the numbers, just another expression of them. Kate being a variable is a great observation, and very in-character for her whole time on the show now that I think about it.

I really like Danielle being receptive to Hurley, for nebulous personal reasons. It lessens her mystique a bit but it also makes her more sympathetic, and the fact that he gets her to take him more seriously with a guileless emotional appeal than Sayid did with his smooth operator tactics is a very Hurley thing.

It's going to be a long time before you're able to get to it in the episode guides, so I'm going to shout out my favorite Hurley moment right here: when Sawyer makes fun of him at the wrong moment and Hurley BEATS HIM UP. Tackling him into a tarp so the fight is covered up makes it feel like an old Andy Capp cartoon where the fight is represented by a cloud of dust with fists popping out of it, and the one bit where Sawyer tries to crawl out and Hurley pulls him back makes me think of a raptor attack in Jurassic Park. Classic cathartic comedy moment

I feel your point about Jacob “focusing on the constants and forgetting about the variables “ explains the entirety of the show.

Y'know, as much of a Lore freak as I am, I've never minded some concepts never being fully explained in media. To me, the Numbers are just that. A mystical concept, like a thread woven in the fabric of LOST. A little treat for attentive viewers of the show to pick up on as they go, to connect and notice. I'm ok with not getting a black-and-white answer about their origin or meaning. I do REALLY like the idea that Hugo was actually the one to record the transmission with the Numbers though. There's been a couple bootstrap paradoxes in the show already.
