As a 13 year old kid way back when from SE Texas I remeber reading that English kings didn't speak English until Henry V. Didnt know what a norman was. Thought anglo saxons were from england. I didn't understand, hard to wrap my head around and that was when I discovered the history of Britain and how much I thoroughly enjoyed all of it from the ancient celtic tribes all the way to the plantangenets and everything in-between. Nothing like it.

My family surname was first discovered in Anglo-Saxon England in the county of Kent in 1016 AD and the document stated that my paternal ancestor was an Earl of a shire in Sussex. Ironically, I suspect we would have been stripped of our estate because of Harold’s loss at Hastings in 1066, so this battle directly impacted my family history.
