Dominic: "Why is England so exceptional?" His favourite question ever.

My son lives in the US so I have visited often. They had a radio programme there called All Things Considered which my husband and I often listened to. On one occassion they had a lawyer as a guest who made the claim "there was no law in England before the Norman Conquest". It still makes me angry and this must be 20 years ago. I hope he knew more about law.

Is it just a coincidence that they’re discussing 1066 for their 1,066th episode?

I attended the reinactment at Battle Abbey last year and was struck by the fact that the crowd still booed the Norman's. There was even a few shout's of "Sod off back to France" thrown in for good measure.

I’ll just drop this comment here. I’ve been watching for weeks now on Spotify and it’s great that I can finally put a face on these 2 awesome blokes.

Loving that this subject clearly taps into T&D’s schoolboy energy. Also love the unintentional irony of the statement “English has become the lingua franca” of the world.

I hope we get a series on the inheritors of the Norman's, the Plantagenets

So happy you are doing this. As an American it took me until very recently to learn what an amazing, complex, epic story the Norman Conquest was.

I love norse and anglo-saxon names, all full of meaning. Hrolf is from Hrodulf ('Glory-wolf), parsed to Rudolf in central Europe. Close kin is Robert, or Hrodbjart (Glory-bright) and Roger/Hrodgeir /Glory-spear).
