A Better Way to Calculate Than Checks, Captures, Threats

My biggest hope is that you learn more than just a calculation technique from this video.

More importantly, I hope you take away something about how to judge any chess technique.

Once the best move is shown, your brain has a nasty habit of making the solution look obvious. A technique can therefore appear to work simply because hindsight gives you an illusion of confidence.

Instead, a higher standard is:

“Could this thought process genuinely have produced the move before I knew the answer?”

For example,

Does it start from evidence that is easy to acquire?

Does that evidence naturally point you towards the move?

Does it assume that you already knew which technique applied?

When evaluating calculation techniques and thought processes in your post-game analysis, look for these gaps in the chain.

If they exist, be suspicious of them.

The best thinking processes don't just explain the answer beautifully after the fact. They give you a realistic path to finding it in the first place.

All the best,
Azel

Folks still may see this as an attack against CCT methods or those who teach them. When in reality it's a shoe(CCT thinking) that no longer fit the author. So, he made some shoe's that would grow with him as he grew as a player. If you love CTT then please by all means keep using what works for you. However, I love the custom shoes the author showed me how to make.

Revolutionary concepts, industry leading production value, and an incredible use of platform. Thanks for making such an insightful video.

Still super thankful to your "Introduction to Chess Calculation" course, for introducing me to this way of thinking! I still often get lost in puzzles, and still certainly sometimes miss tactics for either side in my games... but I sure get a lot more of them right so much more efficiently, thanks to these efforts!

I like this a lot. Every time I do CCT, I spend way too much time calculating.

For anyone considering this course, I strongly reccomend it. It gives you a systematic approach for coming up with candidate moves and honestly the endgame chapter alone was worth it. 10/10 course

"You let the evidence point you toward the answer, rather than guess the answer and try to justify it." Pure gold.
