Did The Strokes ACTUALLY Save Rock or Is That Just HYPE?

  It was Halloween 2000ish, New Paltz NY. My roommate from Rochester was throwing a party & was eager for me to meet his best friend, Fab. We met & hit it off. We decided to indulge in some fungi & within an hour we were out of our minds. Fab & I partied all night and we had a blast. However he kept trying to tell me about his band & I kept blowing him off. Finally the next morning I let him tell me they're playing the "VH1 Fashion show" which satisfied his urge to talk about the band. Fast forward a year, I had moved to Michigan & came back to NY to visit. I bumped into my old roommate & he asked what I had been listening to. I replied "The Strokes".  He said "Oh you're listening to Fab's band". My mind was blown, I should've listened to Fab's hype.

  Can’t even describe the optimism that arose when “Is This It” came out. It felt new and native at the same time. To this day I listen to that album is still “true north” for me musically

  You could tell the were a well rehearsed band from the start. Very smart of them to put in the work studying pop music, getting a music mentor that could help put it all together.

  I often find myself defending the Strokes but it always turns out to be a backhanded compliment. The "yeah sure they're derivative, but they rock or whatever". But you can say that about any band, everyone has their influences. The other day I was reading comments by what I believe are fans of their early stuff saying the new song is just The Voidz. Perhaps. But I went through their Spotify & looked up the streams for The New Abnormal & was shocked to see how many more plays those songs have than some of my old favs. So it seems they have tapped into a new audience. Granted it makes sense that songs from the 2000s don't accumulate as many streams but still surprised at the recent success given how long they've been around. Lastly when I saw this channel doing a piece on them I was like "finally someone talking about this era". Rock channels (and Rick Beato) seem to skip bands like Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interpol, Arctic Monkeys and I'm going to through in Modest Mouse, are generally skipped as have having great rock songs.

  I back in 2001 &nbsp;I acquired &nbsp; The Strokes &nbsp; Is This It &nbsp; vinyl record &nbsp;(with the girls butt album cover) &nbsp; &nbsp;I just learned it is now a rare collectors item.
