  The issue of funding and focus of said funding is a very fatal issue with today's environment because letting the private sector decide where science will go means it will all go towards technology that can earn money off you, instead of just improving everyone's life.

  When I was in college, Bell Labs (part of the Bell System back then) would routinely send out scouts for talent. They wanted to take on the cream of the crop for talent, which resulted in the invention of thousands of devices and processes, many (maybe most) of which had no apparent application in the field of telephony. Tens of thousands of patents. Their mission was to find smart people with ideas, give them their own laboratory and budget, and let them loose to pursue whatever they were interested in. Pure science. Besides accidentally detecting the echoes of the &quot;big bang,&quot; Bell Labs gave us the transistor, lasers, CCDs, Unix and C programming languages, cellular telephony concepts, etc. The list is almost endless.<br><br>As far as NDT&apos;s message here that you&apos;re critiquing, we all know what the fundamental impetus for his message is -- the corruption of our political system.
