I wanted to repost a reply that I gave to a comment regarding the thumbnail because I want more people to see it, so here it is. I totally understand your concerns, and I did experiment with making a thumbnail for this video that didn't include spoilers, but I honestly couldn't find a way to create a thumbnail worth clicking on that didn't include the subjects of the video itself. At the end of the day, my videos are directed mainly at people who have already played through several of the Ace Attorney games and are invested in the community, but I do sincerely apologize to the people who do end up getting spoiled by one of my thumbnails, that sucks and was never my intention. I'm just enjoying making content on my favorite series, but if I want people to actually find and watch that content, then I do have to make my thumbnails eye-catching, for lack of a better term. Regardless, I'll try to keep things a little less spoilery in future thumbnails, but sometimes it's just kind of unavoidable.

I love how, even after everything that Engarde did, there is still an option right at the very end after everything has been revealed to declare him "NOT GUILTY"... and Phoenix just hams it up and mocks the fact that he'll be at risk the moment he steps out of court. He's basically like "Congrats, you're free! What's that? Someone's gonna kill you? Not my problem, LMAO, BYE!" XD

Fun Fact: On Farewell My Turnabout, the detention center theme never plays when you visit Engarde previous to his confession of being De Killer's client, but as soon as we visit Adrian Andrews on the detention center, the theme plays.

That is a really, really big hint on the foreshadowing of the plotwist of the case.

For all of Justice for All's faults, Farewell, My Turnabout is probably the most brilliant case in the entire franchise. It's definitely my favorite case.

Something I think worth pointing out about McGilded is that even after his death, his shadow still looms large over Ryuunosuke. In the very next case, it takes a lot of convincing for Ryuunosuke to defend Soseki, because McGilded absolutely shattered everything Ryuunosuke was taught and believed in.

And in the final case, when Ryuunosuke and Susato are given the means to prove McGilded's guilt.. they find out that he was indeed guilty. They defended a murderer. The truth drops on them like an anvil.

The only positive about the whole mess is that Ryuunosuke is able to use these facts to defend Gina as best he can, since Gina was a victim of McGilded too. He knows it'll damage his career, but one can read it like Ryuunosuke refusing to let McGilded do anymore harm to him or the people he cares about.

Even when dead, McGilded continues to haunt the rest of the first game like a specter. This is why I actually like him more than Matt, because while Matt is an excellent villain for all of the reasons you listed and more, he doesn't really have that same long lasting impact.

As for the result of the 2 cases, both clients receive the punishment that may be even worse than the average punishment applied to guilty individuals which is just imprisonment:
1. Magnus McGilded was killed via being trapped inside a burning omnibus that was set aflamed by soneone else.
2. Matt Engarde is now desperately trying to stay in prison because he knows that a certain betrayed and enraged assasin will go after him the moment he steps foot outside the prison.

My favorite guilty client is Maya

Still can’t believe she just ate all of Phoenix’s burgers like that 😒

Its always a nice twist when the game's core motivation, believing in your client, is tested when you outright know your client is actually guilty. But as a lawyer, by law, you still have a job to do.

I would argue they do a fine job breaking down on their own

Technically, there's two other clients that Phoenix had who were indeed guilty. Just lemme set an anti spoiler buffer here.

The first I'll mention is Paul Atishon, who basically did a similar thing as Engarde before him by keeping Maya hostage in order to coerce Wright into an acquittal. What makes this different from Matt is that we're not seeing this from Phoenix's perspective, but rather from Apollo (and Athena) while their mentor is silently suffering from reliving the second lowest point in his career.
The other client is Ron DeLite, who is one of the most unique of defendants. While Ron is actually innocent of murder, like he's being tried for in the second half of the Episode, he is very much guilty of the crime of theft in the first half. What's even crazier is that, due to the law of Double Jeopardy, he was acquitted and now cannot be tried again for his thefts, making him probably the only criminal to escape justice from Wright.

one thing i love about mcgildeds case, is the circumstances around it. ryunosuke was given this case as a way to prove he is a worthy successor to asogi kazuma, and losing this case wouldve had him sent back to japan on the very next ship. if he didnt get mcgilded acquitted, he wouldve lost everything he had gained up until that point, so you have to fight tooth and nail to prove mcgilded innocent, even though he is guilty, which causes quite a lot of conflict in ryunosuke's character. the fact this in turn leads to the series first incorrect verdict, where a guilty person gets declared innocent and how hollow it feels is masterful. even more so with the information from case 5 with the circumstances around the murder being revealed.

Of the two, I prefer McGilded for two reasons, and both are related to presentation:
1) You are told by the game to not trust Engarde before you even get to meet him. McGilded starts like a run-of-the-mill defendant, plus he's Ryunosuke's FIRST ever client. It only starts to go wrong as the trial continues.
2) How the game actually gaslights you with the fake evidence. You can't open/examine the skylight until after the fake bloodstain is put there, you can't have a good look right under the skylight until after the fake bloodstain is put there, and you can completely skip examining the storage box before it is emptied (I didn't, for example, so I had to trust van Zieks's words that the box wasn't empty at first).
