Where is Shelly Miscavige? It’s a question that still deserves to be asked. In this episode of our ongoing Where’s Shelly Miscavige? series, I’m joined by former senior Scientology executive Anne Gollert Hill, who spent years at Scientology’s secretive international headquarters and personally knew and interacted with Shelly Miscavige. Anne remembers Shelly as serious, intensely dedicated to Scientology, and someone who often acted as a buffer between David Miscavige and the people beneath him. We compare our experiences with Shelly, what it was like working around David Miscavige, and what changed before Shelly disappeared from public view. We also discuss some of the most troubling questions surrounding her disappearance: her reported disagreement with David Miscavige’s relationship with Tom Cruise, the incident involving Scientology’s RTC building, the five beloved beagles she reportedly had to leave behind, and the extraordinary amount of information Shelly would possess after decades at David Miscavige’s side. I also share a conversation with Shelly that has stayed with me for years. Speaking about a close friend who had escaped Scientology, Shelly told me: “Jan was the smart one. She got away.” Was that simply an observation — or evidence that cracks were already beginning to form? Anne and I also discuss the striking parallels between Shelly Miscavige and Mary Sue Hubbard, L. Ron Hubbard’s wife, who was eventually pushed out of Scientology leadership and largely erased from its official history. Most importantly, we talk about Shelly as a human being. Whatever she believes today, whatever choices she might make if given the opportunity, she deserves the ability to speak for herself.
