THE CHAIR: The F-3H Demon Was A Vital, But Sedate Part Of US Naval Aviation History

I love that picture of the F2H, F3H, and F4H. You can almost see the Navy's requirements evolve. "That's a nice jet, can you give us a faster swept-wing version, maybe with an afterburner? OK, better, but can you give us a two-engine version with larger wings for more ordnance? Oh yeah, that's the stuff, run us up a couple thousand of those."

The Demon is one of my favorite jets - mostly due to its proto-F4 looks

Id love a documentary on the A4 Skyhawk. The concept of a simple, effective, aircraft that just gets the job done is strangely appealing

As they say, the only thing colder than a Westinghouse fridge is a Westinghouse jet engine

I love how if the Navy had listened to McDonnell in the first place about replacing the obviously failed J40 and westinghouse as an engine producer, then they would've had a semi-decent aircraft to begin with and would've come out of this better in the end and also probably wouldn't have lost so many pilots to it.

Grumman: "Allow us to present this carrier-capable jet/rocket powered design... you guys are cool with your personnel handling and storing liquid oxygen aboard ship, right?".

I wish I was that optimistic about anything at all.

@31:12 Regarding the method of defeating the lock on range limit. I bet I know how they did it. I worked on Phantom radars. They had a 50 mile lock on limit. All that that meant was if you were in a range setting of more than the 50 mile setting, lock on was disabled. I got around that while playing around on the ground by finding a nice, big target at longer range (at least once it was a Goodyear blimp judging by the relative speed) and putting the range gate on the target at 100 or more miles and then switching the radar to the 50 mile setting putting the target way off the top of the scope. The range gate was still on the then invisible target, but I could lock on to it and track it.

You can so clearly see the DNA of the Demon in the incredibly successful F-4 Phantom (one of my favorite birds / bricks ever). The days of progress written in 🩸. A lot of it.

Holy shit....what a sad story. I've always wondered what happened to Westinghouse engines. Sounds like it was a well earned kick to the curb...😮
