Most pilots prefer the normal approach because the fast approach requires losing a lot of altitude very quickly. Experienced pilots consider it a dangerous approach to make.

The captain may just have preferred the longer approach to avoid a steep descent through the clouds near mountains.

I really appreciate that you focus on some of these lesser-known incidents. Thanks for covering these.

I used to live in Spain and flew several times to Bilbao. Landing there is epic. Winds change a lot. An A320 was smashed in the runway due to a wind change in 2001 (IB-1456).
When landing, you do fly over a cemetery just before landing and you can actually see this cemetery in the video (well done).
As for the theory of the captain taking the longer route to “hurt” Iberia with fuel costs, this has been the prevailing theory to choose the longer route over the short one, but it was never confirmed.

Complete speculation on this one to say that the Captain was trying to stick it to Iberia by taking the full length approach - was surely best practice to avoid shortcuts + complete the full approach.

Iberia pilots had a problem with misreading 3 pointer altimeter readings and hitting terrain. In 1967 they put a Caravelle into a ridge at Haslemere, Surrey. I also remember a Caravelle crashing downwind in Ibiza

Well, it's obvious that the CRM on this flight fell way short of professional competency and that would appear to be largely the fault of the Capt. who we assume was the non-handling pilot. I would though take issue with your assumption that his choice to reject the offer of the shorter route was somehow related to his resentment toward the airline, that's a wild leap in the dark. Ideally we brief an approach while all is calm in the cruise prior to commencing descent, both going over the approach plates having got the ATIS that let's us know the airfield conditions and operational status. It can sometimws be the case that things change when closer in, or an option for an alternative be given, the choice then will depend on a number of issues and the increased pressure resulting from accepting the alternative. The weather wasn't ideal, they were well into the approach phase and a rebriefing may well have involved hurried checklists and configeration demands... why it went so pearshaped while following the briefed for approach will remain speculation.

6:30 -- gotta love the total lack of altitudes on the so-called ILS approach chart. What a disgrace.

Your accusation and title seem baseless sir. One might see it as click bait and disrespectful to the people lost on that flight.

I’ve been a commercial helicopter pilot for 23 years. What I have learned is that pilots are very deliberate creatures. I don’t think this was an intentional mistake. I believe the most likely reason is for safety and passengers comfort. But also, I wasn’t there and don’t have enough information to make a valid argument. No matter the cause we can definitely learn from the tragedy. Thank you for sharing.
