57:07 General advice: Dont ever just growl or yell like this at a black bear. It’s best to speak firmly and loudly in normal words and make yourself look bigger. If you don’t use real language (growl like an animal like he did) the bear would likely think youre threatening it, but talking just kind of makes it confused but not threatened, so it is most likely to leave. The best advice Ive heard though is to follow your instincts - you and the bear are both just animals that want to live (from someone who worked in Yellowstone for 30 years).

I ran into a black bear while hiking the cove mountain trail in Gatlinburg. I had just reached a point at the top of the mountain where some cabins were and the bear was walking up the road. I figured he'd see me and run off but he came straight at me, turns out he was headed towards some trash people left at thier cabin. I stepped off to the side and let him walk by me but I had set my camera bag down and the bear started messing with it... I stepped towards him to get him away from my bag and he wasn't having any of that... he started snarling and stomping his front feet. I did the same and the bear looked confused AF turned and walked off. All things considered, it was a pretty cool encounter and I got some nice pictures 😐👍
