  The Soviet Union was collapsing and they knew it. It was a last jab to show us what they could do if they had wanted. I was in one of those P-3 Orions that flew out of Brunswick Maine.  It was a surprise. After that, their subs mostly stayed in port.

  All the did was show us what needed to happen and reprogram the system , they gave away their hand at the same time allowing us to understand the failure to find the subs and correct that with reprogramming of the system ....

  This was a big mistake by the USSR at that time. It gave the USA knowledge to improve there system. IF i was a Russian i would go out to make sure the USA could ear us going to the Atlantic, then go back to the in to Russian water in silence, then return to the Atlantic in a silent mode. <br>Then wait a few weeks and go back and make sure the American could ear the submarine returning to Russia port. &nbsp;<br>That way the USA would never know that the USSR had defeated the systems, so they would not try to improve it since they thought it was working. <br><br>That’s what I a tactical advantage. &nbsp; When the other side doesn’t know what you can do.

  Thank you_ &nbsp; profound showing in how we pour money and rely upon exotic stuff with little or no war practicality against smart and savvy adversary. &nbsp;Issue remains and is compounded today, e.g., we spend ~$120 Million for each F35 with less than %40 flight readiness in favorable and non-combat conditions_ requiring climate controlled hangers.
