i'm in high school. i've been playing sports my entire life, so im not "slim" but i am in shape. when i tell you the amount of people that have called me overweight..my own best friend (not anymore) tried to get me to stop eating breakfast and eat a smaller lunch, when i tried to tell her i need food to fuel my body for sports she told me being skinny was better than being strong. this is a serious issue that is affecting young women's minds. so thank you!

My mother in law died a couple of years ago following an essential operation. The operation was successfull. She just didn’t have sufficient body mass to come out of the induced coma. Building musle and bone density is absolutely essential for everyone but especially for women, who are at risk of losing bone density after menopause and who may compound the problem by not eating sufficiently. If you don’t develop the habits when you’re young you don’t stand much of a chance later in life.

As a man, seeing the flip-side of toxic female fitness advice is incredibly eye-opening. There's a ton of disturbing similarities between "Skinny-tok" and all the gymbros on social media telling every young male to hop on gear to get as big and muscular as possible.

Keep fighting the good fight Sharelle!
🥊🥊🥊🥊

As a 65 year old woman who spent her entire life trying to starve herself into skinniness let me tell you young women : STOP IT ! Like saving for your retirement, plan in your youth for bone health later. And for your metabolic health now and later.

I'm a 48-year-old female power lifter and I have zero desire to be skinny. I will be thick and muscular until I die. Because of my muscle mass, I'm medically classified as obese via BMI, which is really annoying. But I would rather be that than be underweight. 💪🏼💪🏼

As someone who developed an eating disorder at a young age (~12), nothing enrages me more than when I see women online promoting extreme thinness like its the peak of health and beauty. I never fully developed, my bones are weak and I have heart issues that have followed me into my 20s. Im at a point in my life where I'm focusing on gaining weight and muscle, but its so frustrating to see all of my peers slowly develop eating disorders because of social media/peer pressure to conform to this standard. Not to mention triggering!!

The worst gimmicky trends I remember had to be the fat spot reduction myth and when they were selling all that goofy exercise equipment like the shake weight and vibrating abs belt haha

I think the best thing my parents did for me and my physical/mental health was putting me in a very traditional Dojo at the age of 8. I was there hours a day for the next 20 years. It focused me on being healthy and smart with my body. We were all in equally shapeless white pajamas and because the focus was on developing and getting stronger, faster and smarter. It meant that I never suffered the same pressures I might have if I had done gymnastics or ballet. Now in my 30's I am in a gym and feeling great just working on getting stronger. I can already see the improvements in my body. I am not focusing on a goal number but on overall health and that includes making better choice with my food. I am trying to get back to my Dojo too.
