I remember curling up at night beneath old quilts so heavy you could hardly turn over. We lived in a 4 room house and shut off the kitchen in winter to strip tobacco and used coal.

I am now 72. I remember well my grandmother's small home with the Pot Belly Stove in the livingroom. <br>I remember the nearly constant burn blisters . Blisters on my hands from backing up with my hands cusped behind me to warm up. Ooops. Too darn close !!!

The blue Perfection kerosene heater was the heart of our cabin during every power outage. I can still smell that distinct scent of kerosene and see my Dad adjusting the wick by flashlight.

Those steamed heaters were what kept us alive in Germany station in the Army.<br>They were incredible heat providers for 120 personal in a 3 story barracks. Cant even imagine how many times i preheated my boots, gloves, field jacket, on them.. coal fired, normally it would take 1 hr to provide heat to 40 separate rooms. Brings back some beautiful memories before Formation, out side in the snow at 10° F

There was something magical about a grain heat bag under the covers on a sub-zero night. The weight of the warm rice against your feet and that faint toasted aroma... it's a comfort that an electric blanket just can't replicate.

I was born in 1961. We lived in big old drafty farmhouse & we had a warm morning wood stove, & a wood & coal burning kitchen stove for heat. We would leave bricks on top of the stoves to get hot. At bedtime, we would wrap a brick in thick newspaper & wrap with string. It was so warm under your feet & would stay hot until morning.

Stacking bricks around the stove is a classic, but my Grandpa also used to put a large soapstone on top of the burner. He’d wrap it in an old wool blanket and put it at the foot of our beds.
