15 Abandoned Rooms Inside the Vatican Nobody Uses

15 Abandoned Rooms Inside the Vatican Nobody Uses The Vatican is forty-four hectares — smaller than many golf courses, more densely layered with history than almost any equivalent area on Earth. Within those forty-four hectares stand buildings whose total floor space runs into the hundreds of thousands of square metres, accumulated across fifteen centuries of construction, addition, modification, and occasional demolition. Popes who wanted a new wing added it. Popes who inherited a wing they disliked ignored it. Popes who needed more storage, more office space, more ceremonial rooms, more accommodation for the growing bureaucracy of the universal Church, simply built. The result is a complex whose current institutional needs occupy only a fraction of its available space, and whose unused rooms — abandoned not because they are damaged or dangerous but because institutional life has simply moved on from them — number in the dozens if not the hundreds. These abandoned rooms are not ruins. The Vatican does not tolerate ruins within its forty-four hectares — the maintenance standards of an institution that is both the world's most visited tourist destination and a functioning sovereign state ensure that the physical fabric of the buildings is maintained even when the rooms within them serve no current purpose. What makes a Vatican room abandoned is not physical deterioration but functional disappearance — the room still stands, its walls are sound, its ceiling is intact, its floor is clean, but no one comes to it for any purpose that the institution currently recognizes as requiring a room. It is maintained in a state of institutional limbo: present, preserved, purposeless. Today we are going through fifteen abandoned rooms inside the Vatican that nobody uses — what each room is, when it was last in active use, what it once contained or served, and what its current state of institutional emptiness reveals about the institution that maintains it in purposeless preservation. All years in this script are written in words. Let's begin.
