Most people don't know that Reba McEntire's monster 1991 hit was actually a cover of this 1969 hit. This is the original.

Bobbie Gentry was one of the first women proud with no apologies.

What you would need to understand is, for the time period, this was a provocative song and her performance was just shy of Rated R for television. Thank you Johnny Cash for getting Bobby Gentry on a visual record with this hit.

Bobby Gentry is so lit 🔥 she would be fire in any era. Her swag is through the roof.

Reba did a bang up job covering this but the original will always be my favorite

The strongest part about the song is the mother sacrifice planning ahead of time to make her daughter's Life better

This was a very bold song for it's day. Song radio stations wouldn't play it at first because of it's content. Fancy had to sell herself to get by. So sad.

Bobbie Gentry disappeared from public eye and retreated to her home and will not interview. There's only one picture when she was 72 with a family member. She's 78 now. Still beautiful.

I was born in 1963 and the first time I remember see Bobbie Gentry was on Flip Wilson 1969... brilliant!
