I think some people in this world do not understand poverty, and the lengths people go through to get out of it. Especially for the benefit of their children. True poverty will back you into some dark corners.

One thing that bothers me about this song is that people demonize the mother. She wasn't ,"turning her daughter out", to support the family. She never intended to see Fancy again after that day. The mother was dying and knew the baby would as well. She did what she thought best to see Fancy survive and hopefully thrive. The fact that wellfare folks took the baby was a blessing the mother probably hadn't counted on.
