My mother told me when she was a young girl they used to put clean rags in underwire when they had their periods. She never had a bra so she said she cut the crotch out of a girdle and pulled it up to her underarms. She passed 21 years ago at the age of 80. The girls of today would have just died. I feel Blessed that I was born in 1946.

Mom told me that they used diapers for 'that time of the month', she had only 2 dresses - one to wear and one to wash.  I remember having to use Grandma and Grandpa's outhouse out back.  I was scared of the mean rooster that was known to spur people.  And yes, it was complete with Sears & Roebuck catalogue.  During the depression, you did well to have plenty to eat and beans were a staple.  We have no idea, an orange was a real treat at Christmas.

No running water, rare baths, and shared barbershop towels? Yikes. It’s a miracle anyone survived a handshake!

My great grandmother was one of nine born in 1894. She told me girls used cloths during their cycles. They were hand  washed with a washboard at the creek and hung on the clothes line. Anyone visiting would immediately know there were numerous females in the home. She also shared how it felt when seeing a car for the first time as a young girl playing outside with her siblings!!

Benjamin Franklin would take "air baths", it was written he would get naked and sit on his balcony and felt the clean air would clean his body. Would not want to be his neighbor lol.

This is essentially how the homeless live today. No running water, no soap, no electricity, no toothpaste, no laundry detergent.

The common distance for an outhouse from a residence was 100'.  That's 100' too close in the summer and 100' too far in the winter.

Watching “Gunsmoke”, I often wondered what those rooms upstairs over Miss Kitty’s saloon must have smelled like.  😂

When I was a kid my grandparents couldn't afford toilet paper. We used rags, magazines, and newspapers
