Thank you so much for this. It has always been my favorite. It struck a cord with me and even though I love a lot of the others there’s just something cozy, playful, serious and delightful about eight.

This game has aged very well. Making it a successful and impressive attempt at following up the impossible task of VII

Woah! Never thought I'd come across another "in the AM" 😄

Fantastic video!! What I love most is your framing in the end that the FF series' identity being reinvention. I never really thought about that point before and that makes perfect sense.

8 has always been my favourite, always will be, and it’s not even close for me. No disrespect to other entries in the series which are equally iconic and legendary.

You're probably entirely right about FF8 subverting how RPG mechanics worked and that throwing people for a loop. But, I've always found the oft-repeated statement of "People struggled with FF8 because they defaulted to grinding and then got punished" to be massively overstating things. FF8 is not a SMT game, it's not particularly hard.

When I was a kid, I was shocked to see that FF8 had a flat experience amount to get to every level, I couldn't believe it, so I happily grinding my heart out and was super excited to get to lv99 before the end of Disk 2. I had absolutely no idea that Level Scaling was a thing, I wouldn't have even known what that was. And even after grinding to lv99 I never noticed it (I did notice that I wasn't steamrolling the game like I'd expected, but I didn't think much of that).

The only JRPGs I'd played before then were probably FF5 and FF7, and I'd used savestates for 5 so I was far from particularly good at the genre. But I still got through 8 without any issue, because it just isn't that hard. There's zero chance I was junctioning "correctly", my GF assignments were almost certainly not optimal, and I know that I remember that I never did Triple Triad at all, but I was still able to figure out junctioning well enough to make myself strong enough to get through the game, with my entire party at lv99.

Imo: If someone really did get walled from FF8, it wasn't because they grinded, it was because they refused to interact with the game's mechanics even as much as I had as an untrained child.

FF8 is still one of my least favourite FF games, but that's almost entirely beause of the story.

This was such a refreshing game when it came out. It was massive and people were dying to find out anything about it after FF7. I remember the demo disc being so exciting 😎 the card game was addicting. Nice job covering it
