TRying to achieve 100% recovery of anything like water is like creating a perpetual-motion machine. Nice in math theory but imposisible in a universe of entropy.

Well by definition it stops being a colony under the control of a foreign entity when the last message arrives. Colloquially if it couldn't self sustain it did not rise to the status of colony and was only an outpost. At only 40kw of power they are doomed from the start.

Maybe it's my comments on these "sleepy" videos but the guy does seem to be leanring VERY SLOWLY. I noted that he now accepts we can easily make oxygen from water.

The Viking colony in Greenland their economy depended on Walrus Ivory. Bubonic plague and cooling down of the climate and it were over in a century. This was on earth. Lighter note they need to manufacture Mars Bars.

ENTROPY. There is nowhere to go in the universe to escape its destructive effects. Nowhere. Including Mars. All of the machines that provide the faux earth environment inside a Mars colony are degrading from the moment they are started. And the colony cannot possibly stock an endless supply of replacements for every single component. Eventually, the colony will become unworkable, incapable of maintaining the earth-like environment the colonists require to survive.
