Once you understand the scale of the Universe, human problems suddenly feel unbelievably small. Thank you.

This documentary is a masterclass in dismantling human intuition. It’s absolutely mind-melting to realize that if Earth were a basketball, the ISS would orbit just 1/4 of an inch above its surface—yet here we are, peering 93 billion light-years into the deep. The looming ‘Cosmic Dark Age’ mentioned in the thread is particularly haunting; the idea that dark energy could eventually accelerate galaxies away until the cosmic web is permanently erased from our sky makes our current window of existence feel like a rare, beautiful miracle. We are incredibly lucky to witness these filaments before they are lost to the void. Absolute masterpiece!

“Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind‑bogglingly big it is.
I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's,
but that's just peanuts to space.”

Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy.

What really gets me is that looking farther into space also means looking farther back in time. At some point, “distance” and “time” almost become the same thing when you're talking about the universe.

The fastest man made vehicle is now the Parker space probe with the ability to travel 119 miles per second, which is more than 400,000 mph. At that speed it would take 9 days to reach the sun. Five years to reach the same distance as the Voyager which is not even a light day. It would take over 6,000 years for the Parker space probe to reach the next star. over 200,000 years to travel the width of the Milky Way. 4 million years to reach the next galaxy.

There's a really good website I visited once that shows the distance between planets to scale. So you can actually appreciate how far apart the each planet is relative to the Sun (rather than the very deceiving models we're so accustomed to in the school classroom). My jaw dropped, when I realized how 99.99% of our solar system is nothing but empty space.
