oh my goodness an affordable way to get/make a custom dress form would be absolutely incredible, what a phenomenal idea! Even without the materials supplied, having someone do the work of mapping your body and then just giving you the pattern for it would be so so worth it, especially since I imagine most people who would have a use for it are people who likely already have some decent enough sewing skills and knowledge when it comes to following patterns. Love it!

1:21 Double-jointed person here (joint hypermobility syndrome)- I could probably manage to drape on myself with a lot of patience (I've almost entirely self-drafted a corset on myself as a teenager, to middling success), but it would require a good few mock-ups (which I have little patience for). Dress-forms are much easier. In the words of my mother, 'Just because you can, doesn't mean you should'

The dress form is amazing. As someone with severe scoliosis, a 3d scan would be the ultimate chance of an accurate dressform. A diy kit would be great for us international viewers ❤

Ohh, I feel like getting a custom dressform would initially be very confronting but then being able to make perfectly fitting clothes must feel amazing

Charlie girl, we are so proud of your progress in learning to sew, and in being so brave to just plunge in and learn new things. An inspiration to us all!

using the gingham fabric was a brilliant idea, not just because it makes making even pleats easy, but because it makes it really easy to confirm that your bust/waist/hip/hem lines are all straight! Good job.

I've recently learned about sewing a waist stay into a strapless dress. With a waist stay, you add wide elastic and hooks inside the seams of the dress which will be invisible underneath the back closure of the dress. From what I've read, it's a game changer. Next time I sew a strapless dress, I'm going to give it a try.

I do bridal alterations and wanted to give some input on strapless dresses. There's a few things you can add or look out for that will help the dress stay up without it needing to be criminally tight.

A waist tape is a phenomenal add to keep a dress from falling past your waist. It's two pieces of elastic, one in each side seam and they usually hook and eye in the back like a bra. In most of the dresses I've seen them in they have multiple rows of eyes like a bra so size is more variable. They generally do not go around the front of your body.

You could also try an inner corset or a corselete. There is an undergarment called a corselete, but the one I'm referencing is built into the dress like the waist tape is. A corselete is like a waist tape but usually larger and boned. An inner corset laces.

Silicone elastic! It's a very stretchy elastic with a line of silicone down it. The silicone grips the skin slightly and will also help the dress stay up and in position. I also use it to sort of fudge a small amount of stretch in non stretch fabrics.

Boning would definitely also help the dress stay in place. Putting it at each of the seams you have would be lovely. I'm sure it sounds like overkill, but the comfort level is incredible. A well boned and fitted bodice will keep you upright without you having to do any work. It's great.

As for the strapless bra. I am a larger chested person myself. I do very much like my Boomba strapless bra. I haven't tried the cups myself, but a lot of my brides rave about them. The strapless bra has no back strap and doesn't make me want to rip my skin off.

Alternatively, you could also buy and sew in cups. Wawak sells several different styles, but they're great. We go through a lot of their cups.

I work on a lot of very heavy strapless dresses every week! You can make a strapless dress comfortable that will also stay up.

PS Distilled water will get soooo much stuff out of fabric. The best thing for your blood is your spit (eg. Your mom's spit doesn't work on your blood), the next best thing is distilled water. It doesn't work with set in or heated stains, but if it's less than 6 mos old and hasn't been heated, it'll get it out. Blood, grass, dirt, self tanner, lipstick. It's amazing. Peroxide will weaken the fibers of your fabric.

Your style of sewing is so valuable right now as patterns are becoming harder to obtain. Or what we want just isn’t in patterns. Thank you for the projects like this.
